The foundational concepts and core skills of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) can be helpfully adapted and integrated into many treatment settings and theoretical approaches, including into our work with neurodivergent folks.

Delivery: Synchronous Virtual Classroom via Zoom
While many clinicians know DBT is a gold standard intervention for many who struggle with big feelings and is often delivered as a comprehensive standalone treatment program, what’s often less understood is that the foundational concepts and core skills of DBT can be helpfully adapted and integrated into many treatment settings and theoretical approaches, including into our work with neurodivergent folks.
Neuroinclusive approaches to DBT engage the philosophical roots of dialectics, center flexibility, and emphasize mutual recognition, validation, sensory focus, and learning through doing.
This interactive, experiential two-day training combines rigorous review and application of Marsha Linehan's protocols and interventions with creative, neurodivergent-affirming adaptations.
Day One strengthens clinicians' practice of DBT through an intermediate-level skills training. We'll review target hierarchies, chain analyses, diary cards, and introduce core modules and skills through the lens of recognition and validation. Participants will explore how witnessing alongside skill-teaching and practice can support therapeutic change. The day includes case examples, interactive activities, and brief experiential mindfulness practices woven throughout.
Day Two introduces the neurodiversity paradigm and neurodivergent-affirming approaches to DBT, integrating neuroinclusive adaptations geared toward increasing accessibility and empowerment for a new generation of clients. We'll adapt core approaches to better appreciate nuanced sensory profiles, varied neurocognitive styles, and communication differences. Interventions will include poetry therapy for reimagining ACCEPTS and IMPROVES skills, using special interests as skill anchors, building sensory-informed toolkits, and invitations to impromptu mini case consultations within our small group. The focus remains on practical application to improve clinician skills when working with neurodivergent clients.
NB: Participants will receive optional preparation instructions for gathering simple sensory materials likely on hand in the home and office.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of DBT's philosophical foundations and core protocols as a foundation for neuroinclusive adaptations.
- Apply the four DBT skills modules—core mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness—in clinical practice.
- Understand the neurodiversity paradigm and its relevance to clinical practice.
- Learn neurodivergent-affirming approaches that emphasize mutual recognition and sensory-informed interventions in clinical practice.
Instructor:
Megan Lederman, MA, LPC (they/them) is a practicing psychotherapist in Philadelphia and is the founder of neuroinclusive relational DBT programming at Growth thru Change. When not in the consulting room, they are the Director of Clinical Programming for the intensive outpatient program at Charlie Health and are currently writing a dissertation in Philosophy and Social Thought at the European Graduate School in Saas Fe, Switzerland. In their spare time, they direct and support a small Cambodia-based village dog rescue.
